AROMATHERAPY - WHY I'M OBSESSED WITH ESSENTIAL OILS
Because I work from home, I'm always looking for ways to make my environment more appealing. That can mean organizers for less clutter, candles for a cozy feeling... Or, in this case, essential oils and a diffuser, to create an environment that evolves with my mood.
The thing about essential oils is that they really make an environment feel cozy and welcoming, but in a way that fits your mood and mindset, no matter what it might be. If that's not versatile, then I don't know what is. And you guys know I'm all about versatility, wether about style, food or home decor.
If you're not exactly sure what I mean, let me backtrack a little. To make it real clear and simple, I'll start at the beginning: Aromatherapy.
For those not familiar, aromatherapy is simply the process of influencing your mood and brain function with smells. One of the easiest and most efficient ways to do that is by burning essential oils in a diffuser. Each essential oil has different properties and influences our mind and bodies in different ways. Here are 9 of the most popular essential oils, and what they do when used in aromatherapy:
Lavender: Relieves stress and anxiety. Helps with relaxation and falling asleep.
Eucalyptus: Enhances creativity. Invigorates, helps feeling calm & refreshed.
Frankincense: Relieves congestion. Mood-enhancing. Relieves stress and anxiety. Improves concentration and memory.
Peppermint: Improves concentration and focus. Performance-enhancing. Eliminates fatigue.
Lemongrass: Energizing. Wakes up the senses.
Lemon: Energizes the mind. Mood-enhancing. Boosts energy.
Sweet Orange: Uplifting and refreshing. Mood-enhancing.
Tea Tree: Calming and relaxing. Relieves congestion.
Rosemary: Invigorating, refreshing and stimulating. Memory and performance-enhancing.
As you can see, no matter what your end goal is, there's pretty much an oil for that. These 9 oils are some of the most popular, but there's WAY more to work with out there, too.
The first time I ordered, I didn't know much about oils in general and wanted to experiment. So I got this set from Amazon, including these 9 basic essential oils. I'm really glad I did, because it really allowed me to play around and discover the universe of essential oils, without spending a fortune. These oils are under 20$, and grown with no pesticides, herbicides, GMO or any additives.

About the diffuser, I actually love mine a lot. It's made out of plastic, but looks like wood. Which means it looks great in my studio and doesn't look like a big eyesore. It also has a tiny bit of it that changes colour, which makes it look kinda cool. Some diffusers are much brighter and they're entirely made out of plastic that glows and changes colour, which is also super rad. You can even use them as night lamps.
But since I wanted to use mine before bed, and I love sleeping in a room that's darker than a coffin, I figured it wasn't for me. For my first one, I wanted a simple, understated one, but the next one I get will be a little fancier. Oil diffusers also vary in price from about 10$ to more than 200$. So you really have a whole lot of possibilities there too, depending on what you're looking for.
Now that we've been over the individual oils and the diffuser, here comes my favourite part: Mixing them. With essential oils, you can actually create recipes just like food. Except instead of creating new taste combinations, it creates heavenly scents... That all have even more complex ways of influencing your mood and mindset. Here are my favourite essential oil mixes:
For The Most Productive Day Ever
3-4 drops of Eucalyptus oil
3-4 drops of Peppermint oil
For When I'm In A Bad Mood, But Need To Get Shit Done
3-4 drops of Rosemary oil
3-4 drops of Lemon oil
For A Crazy Energy Boost
2-3 drops of Lemon oil
2-3 drop of Lemongrass oil
2-3 drops of Sweet Orange oil
For When I'm Too Wired To Sleep
3-4 drops of Lavender oil
3-4 drops of Frankincense oil
These are all great oil combinations, but the one I use the most is the first one. There's something about peppermint and eucalyptus that just works for me. Not only does it smell amazing, I actually see a difference in my productivity levels AND creativity. That mix is in my diffuser almost everyday, and it helps me blast through the day.
Before trying essential oils, I honestly thought they were kind of a hoax. But now, I know they really make a difference and I seriously wouldn't go back. Maybe it's psychological, but either way, as long as it works, I'm on board!
