SEPHORA PLAY FEBRUARY 2019 - WHAT'S IN IT + FULL PRODUCT REVIEWS
Hi guys! Happy Wednesday! Last week, when I was super sick, my February Sephora Play box was delivered, and I just got around to testing everything in it this week, so I thought I would review it for Beauty Wednesday. I reviewed the January box last month, giving you my first thoughts on the samples.
But this month, I wanted to go a little more in depth, so I decided I would actually test out all the samples and do a full review of each of them, on top of breaking down what’s in the box.
First, let’s start by taking a look at what came inside the box:
1. WANDER BEAUTY BAGGAGE CLAIM GOLD EYE MASKS
2. ESTEE LAUDER DOUBLE WEAR FOUNDATION
3. GLOW RECIPE WATERMELON GLOW SLEEPING MASK
4. LANCOME HYDRA ZEN ANTI-STRESS MOISTURIZER
5. BITE BEAUTY AMUSE BOUCHE LIPSTICK
6. (Bonus) DOLCE & GABBANA THE ONLY ONE
And now let’s look at each product individually:
WANDER BEAUTY BAGGAGE CLAIM GOLD EYE MASKS
Sample’s value: $4.17 - This has to be one of the products I was the most excited about, as I' had been wanting to try some eye masks for such a long time. I was also really curious was Wander Beauty was about, so this was definitely a 2 birds 1 stone situation. I positioned the masks RIGHT under my eyes and then I was afraid I might have put them too close and I’d get some burning, but no - these are super gentle, and they did give me bright and rested (looking) under-eyes.
Also, this is a detail, but I looked really bougie while they were on - I almost went out to walk my dog just so I could show off my gold under-eyes… #noshame.
Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation
Sample’s value: $9.80 - Upon opening this sample, I was kind of annoyed, to be honest. The Estée Lauder Double Wear foundation is a product I know well, because it used to be my go-to foundation for a little more than a year… But there’s just no way I could have tested it out otherwise, because the one I got is at least 6 shades too dark. Now here’s the thing: I know it must be really hard to to please everyone when sending foundation in a subscription box… But if you can’t do it, DON’T. Period. This sample feels like a total waste, especially since the shade name is printed out on the guide, which leads me to believe that everyone got the same shade… Useless, you say?
Now obviously I can’t wear this, but the foundation itself is pretty good. It has good, buildable coverage, and it is pretty mattifying. I stopped wearing it because it was oxidizing on me and made me look a little too orange for my taste, but it is a good foundation if you have oily skin.
GLOW RECIPE WATERMELON GLOW SLEEPING MASK
Sample’s value: $5.63 - This is the other sample I was super pumped about, for the same reasons as the eye masks (can you tell I really love skincare?!). I wanted to use it as an overnight mask, because I already have a ton of other regular face masks, and I loved the idea of waking up to a surprise, ha! So I applied a thin layer all over my face, waited for it to dry and went to bed. Side note, this mask dries pretty quickly. I was always a little worried of an overnight mask being annoying and getting all over my pillows, but now I see how it’s possible. The smell is also completely enticing and (almost) made me want to eat it.
The next morning (this morning) I woke up, rinsed it off and looked for some results. I have to say, they were not as shocking as I thought they would be… My skin doesn’t really look much glowier than usual, but it does look very matte. One thing I will say is that it does look a little smoother all over, probably due to the AHAs in the mask. Usually I’m not a fan of those, since I can’t really use exfoliators with Curology but in this case, they were gentle enough to actually make a difference.
I’m not discouraged though, and I want to try this mask again, because so many people LOVE it. I’m thinking maybe I should apply a little more next time? If you have this mask and love it, please let me know what I should do in the comments section below!
LANCOME HYDRA ZEN ANTI-STRESS MOISTURIZER
Sample’s value: $4.80 - I was a little underwhelmed at first by this sample, because Lancôme skincare, to me, is just… unexciting…? But then I applied it to my face, and totally changed my tune about it. First of all, it smells amazing. Second, the texture is the perfect hybrid between a lightweight gel and a rich cream… Which means it’s a great moisturizer that melts in your skin and absorbs really quickly, leaving you with a super healthy, hydrated glow. And honestly, the smell is just so divine, I would have probably kept using it even if I didn’t like the effects that much. Overall, this is a great moisturizer. I will definitely bring the rest of my sample with me next time I travel.
BITE BEAUTY AMUSE BOUCHE LIPSTICK
Sample’s value: $8.97 - I don’t know what’s happening at Sephora with Bite Beauty, but it’s the second time in a row that we get a Bite Beauty lip product in the Play Box, and it’s also the second time that it’s a dark, brownish colour, which I would just never wear. I’m not as upset as I am about the foundation being the wrong shade, because I know this is purely a question of taste, but a little bit of variety would be nice. Seriously, move on people!
That being said, this is another great formula from Bite Beauty. It goes on super smoothly, isn’t patchy at all (which is rare for such a dark colour) and isn’t drying either. It’s just a beautiful, creamy formula. There was transfer when I drank water, but that’s to be expected with any lipstick that’s not a super dry matte lipstick.
BONUS: DOLCE & GABBANA THE ONLY ONE
Sample’s value: $2.82 - If you know me IRL, you know I’m OBSESSED with perfume. I love discovering new fragrances, and I always wear one, even to bed. I’m usually not a fan of Dolce & Gabbana’s women’s fragrances, but this one is divine. It’s feminine and sweet, but in a powerful, strong way, if that makes sense. It’s not usually the type of fragrance I gravitate towards, but I’m obsessed. Quite frankly, this might very well be the next perfume I get for myself. Definitely the discovery of the year (so far!).
TOTAL WORTH OF THE FEBRUARY BOX: $36.19
WAS THIS MONTH’S BOX WORTH IT? Strictly from a monetary point of view, this box was more than worth it (it retails for $10 a month). If you take out the value of the foundation and the lipstick, which I will get no use of, it still makes sense. I’m definitely happy about the eye mask and the sleep mask, as well as with the moisturizer and the perfume. Overall, I’ve discovered some really great products this month, and I feel like this was a great box. It wasn’t perfect, but it was still a great one.
