SPARKLE OVERLOAD, CARNIVAL-INSPIRED FESTIVAL OUTFIT
Ever since I was too young to go to a music festival, I've always been obsessed with elaborate dresses and costumes, which probably started the first time my parents took me to see The Nutcracker at the ballet. I may not be obsessed with princesses and fairies anymore, but the one part of that universe I’m still so in love with is glitters and crystals… And I think that shows in this outfit, ha!
I’ve been eyeing these types of carnival-inspired outfits for years, and this year, I finally decided to actively search for one. My main concern was that all the options I had seen before were either custom-made and WAY out of my price-range, or only available in sizes way too big for me. But after a few hours getting lost in a seemingly unending Pinterest vortex, I found an Etsy shop from China that sells all kinds of belly dancing outfits and instantly fell in love with this one.
I was a little concerned at first with shipping times and quality, as well as getting full-on scammed, since I’ve heard pretty gnarly stories from people who ordered on Etsy and never received the product they paid for, or received something that looked nothing like the item they ordered.
But the whole outfit was $60 (which is a steal considering how many details there are on this outfit) and I paid with a credit card, so I figured I could always file for a refund if things went sour.
I’m sure you can imagine how happy I was when I opened my package and realized that the outfit I ordered looked exactly like it did online (you can see for yourself RIGHT HERE) AND it seemed pretty sturdy as well.
Now I don’t want to pretend it was perfect… The first time I tried it on, one of the little strings on the shoulder popped open and a few of the beads fell off. I felt a little concerned about how it would hold up to actually wearing it, since this wasn’t such a good start, but I’ve worn it for these pictures (obviously) and it held up without a problem. I’m all about giving the benefit of the doubt, so I’ll just chalk this up to a little defect that was really easy to fix and didn’t really impact the look of the costume.
Once again, I feel like the quality was pretty damn decent, especially considering that it was a bargain compared to some similar options that go for three times the price for the bra only (and for a good reason, I understand a lot of work goes into it).
The shipping was also really quick, I think it took about 2 weeks when the seller’s page said it could take up to a month. That being said, I wouldn’t wait too long if you want to order this for a festival this Summer, because a) you never know, and b) I’m sure they’re going to get a lot more orders as some of the biggest festivals get closer.
The most important thing though, at least to me, is the size and fit - probably because it’s always such an issue for me. I ordered the smallest size they had, which was a 32C bra with a 32” belt. For reference, I usually wear a 30D (but don’t ask me what my exact measurements are, I have no idea lol). I wasn’t really afraid of it being too big, because I picked the right size for me, and I know asian sizing is usually considered to fit small in America, but I was still curious to see if it would fit. And it did, like a glove. This set is definitely true to size, and there are 2 straps of velcro on the belt so you can adjust it. Personally, I find it to be a little too big even on the smallest setting, but I do have very narrow hips. If you’re thinking of ordering this, I would say order true to size.
My favourite part of this outfit is definitely how sparkly it is, and it’s entirely covered in silver sequin, with bigger “crystals” in some places. These reflect the light in an incredible way. The necklace, which is also included, is made entirely out of those, and it looks incredibly beautiful when the sun hits it. I’m also a really huge fan of the dangling strands of beads, pearls and rhinestones, which make the whole outfit look really well thought out, and like a lot of attention to details went into it.
This is going to be my outfit on Day 1 of our upcoming festival later this month, except I’m gonna add a lot more crystals on my body and face, to look like a giant disco ball, ha! I might also add a white (or silver sequin, if I can find one) cape over my shoulders… What do you guys think? What would you add to this outfit?
