THE PERFECT BATH TIME RITUAL (& PRODUCT LINE) TO UNWIND AT NIGHT
Today’s post is somewhat a follow up on both topics, which I’m still really into, as well as a new addition to my eco-friendly, cruelty-free collection, which is something I became super passionate about over the last few months.
I’ve talked about it on here before (and even more frequently on Instagram) but I’ve been making an effort lately to pay more attention to which products in my bathroom are cruelty-free, and I’ve been looking for replacements for the products that aren’t.
Since I don’t have the budget to just throw out everything that isn’t cruelty-free and replace it right away (and I also think it would be incredibly wasteful, which would defeat the purpose), this is a transition period that will for sure take a few months, as I repurchase products or their cruelty-free replacement every time I finish a bottle of something.
So for now, let’s just say that I’ve been really into discovering clean, respectful brands, so that when the time comes to replace a certain body wash or moisturizer, I’m not taken by surprise and I know exactly what to do.
A few weeks ago, I discovered this brand from Venice (it doesn’t get any more local than that!!) called Soaptopia, that makes soaps, (duh!) bath products and skincare that are all vegan, natural and junk-free. I got in touch with them and they sent me a GORGEOUS basket filled with different items from their LA Squeeze collection to see if I liked them.
You might have guessed it from the main picture of this post, but the whole collection smells of lemon and lavender (which is why I’m holding a sprig of lavender, wink-wink) and it smells AMAZING.
Seriously though, I can’t stress enough how amazing this smells. When I went to pick it up at my building’s package center, I knew immediately which mail box it was in, because the smell emanating from it was just so distinctive.
If you’ve read my post about aromatherapy, you might remember that one of my favourite essential oils recipe to unwind at night is in fact lavender-lemon, so I felt like this was such a cool coincidence.
Since I always bathe (or shower) at night, I love making it a relaxing experience, allowing me to unwind and get ready for bed. So the fact that all these products smell like lavender (which is known to have relaxing properties) is very fitting.
I couldn’t wait to try them, based on the smell only… And you guessed it, if it made it on here, it means I really loved it! I want to give you guys the full deets on these products, and even though it’s impossible for you guys to smell them (which to me is by far their biggest selling point!) there are a few other things that I loved about each of these products:
The bath salts
I’m going to start with the bath salts while we’re on the subject of a relaxing pre-bed time routine, because these are the epitome of a relaxing bath. To be completely honest, I'm not the biggest fan of a bubble bath. There’s something that I find just so inconvenient about the whole situation of having foam everywhere. I’m usually a bigger fan of bath bombs, because on top of not being so foamy, they’re also really appealing visually… But that also means they can be a bitch to clean up. Bright pink bathtub residue, anyone? I’m not a huge fan of cleaning to begin with (lol), so to me, the idea of having to double-rinse and scrub my tub after every bath is a nightmare. If we’re honest, it’s also the last thing you want to do after lying around, relaxing in a hot bath for 20 minutes… It kind of messes up the good vibes, ya know?
Enter these luxurious bath salts. These obviously smell amazing, that’s the theme throughout. But I also loved the fact that they’re not coloured or dyed, so they’re really mess free. And they also feel super relaxing.
To be totally honest, I wasn’t super familiar with bath salts before, so I did some research (read: a lot of research) and I discovered a few super interesting facts about bath salts:
They help cleansing the skin from toxins, impurities, dirt and sweat, and they’re also emollient, aka they help hydrating dry skin.
They make water softer, which helps soap lather more and rinse off better as well.
They are meant to imitate the benefits of mineral hot springs.
If you guys have been following along for a while, you know how excited I am about that last point. In the last year, Sasha and I have been to 2 different mineral hot springs in the desert. One completely natural and wild, and one that was turned into a wellness center in Palm Springs. Mineral hot springs are incredibly beneficial in treating a variety of symptoms, but I feel like they’re incredibly beneficial for me, considering that I have a lot of arthritis-like symptoms and some eczema.
I haven’t used these long enough for me to say if they actually make a difference in terms of treating bone pain and eczema, but I can definitely say that they made my skin feel SO soft and buttery, on top of providing a super relaxing bath experience.
I honestly didn’t think I would be such a fan of these, but guess what? I’M OBSESSED. Bath salts are definitely my discovery of the month.
THE LIQUID SOAP
I like to use that soap in the shower, and I’m especially happy about this one, because on top of being an amazing product, it also solves the dilemma that I had about finding a nice liquid soap to replace my current non cruelty-free one.
This soap lathers really well, and you don’t need to use a lot either.
THE BODY OIL
This body oil is also up there on my favourite list! I’m a big fan of oils… I use a hair oil, a bunch of different face oils, and now I also have a body oil!
You’re supposed to use this one in the shower, while you’re wet, and dry yourself off with a towel after... But I personally like drying myself up roughly, applying 3-4 pumps of this oil all over my legs, arms and torso, and let it absorb while I do my skincare routine.
I’ve used pure coconut oil on my body before, but I much prefer this blend, since it absorbs much quicker, without leaving an oily feeling on the skin afterwards. Since I love smelling good for bed time, but I like giving my skin a break from perfume at night, this is an amazing alternative. Bonus points? It can also be used as massage oil.
THE BAR SOAP
Visually, this soap is by far the coolest item of the collection. In fact, all of Soaptopia’s bar soaps are a pleasure for the eyes as much as for the nose (and the skin!!). They also have super cool and cheeky names like “Cleaning Me Softly With This Soap”, “Strip Teas” and “Thai One On”. Anyone who knows me IRL knows I have a weak spot for bad puns and dad jokes, so needless to say, this is right up my alley.
I love that the soaps are not perfect, they’re handmade and each piece is truly different. For the first time ever, I understand why someone would want to have fancy, super cute hand soap by the bathroom sink - That’s where I use mine, because I prefer liquid soap in the shower.
I have to say, every time I look at this soap by the sink, I think about that SATC episode when Harry tells Charlotte “You know what I like about living with you, besides those nutty little soaps in the bathroom?” and that alone is enough to make me happy.
On a side note, I have to give a huge shoutout to the wooden ladder soap dish that the company sent me with their soap, because it’s a total life saver! It allows all the water to drain, so your soap stays dry and lasts way longer, instead of sitting in a wet soap dish and getting all soggy and gross. If you like bar soap to wash your hands, I HIGHLY recommend getting one!
I think it’s pretty obvious at this point, but I’m pretty smitten with Soaptopia and their LA Squeeze collection. And take it from me, I used to be the girl who thought natural soap didn’t work… In hindsight, it sounds a little stupid, but what can I say, it can be hard to change some habits you’ve had your whole life. I wasn’t raised in a particularly eco-conscious household (although I’m sure there were much worse than ours), but the older I get, the more I want to be conscious of being respectful of our planet and its inhabitants, wether that means animals or humans.
I also love that they’re located in Venice, because when we think about eco-friendly products, we usually think of natural ingredients, but we oftentimes forget that transportation of goods also plays a huge role in pollution. I personally love shopping local, and I feel like once I’m done with all these goodies, I’m gonna have to go pay them a visit at their physical location, at the Mar Vista Farmer’s market. If you’re in LA, you should definitely pass by, because I hear the whole market is amazing!
Also, if you started looking for mother’s day gifts, I feel like one of their gift sets would be amazing. I know I definitely LOVED mine, and I feel like moms can always use a great excuse to pamper themselves!
Do you guys have some favourite natural, eco-friendly and cruelty-free products you swear by? If you do, please leave them in the comments section below so I can check them out!! TIA!
I’ll leave you on some more pictures from our Soaptopia shoot, because I think they turned out great and I couldn’t choose between all of these! A lot of you asked me to post more pictures with Bentley, and this was the perfect opportunity, because he kept jumping in bed to sniff out the soaps, so we just decided to go with it, ha!
Love you guys,
